(Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Challenges)
Strength
The study of English language and literature has an important influence on improving students' skills. Proficient and skilled use of the English language can enhance career. English Literature is the study of language and culture. One can learn nuance, tone, body language, facial expression and intent by having an idea of how it works. When studying Literature, students can learn not only language aspects but also that language can be used for specific and aesthetic purposes.
Knowing English increases your chances of getting a good job in multinational companies within your home country or at abroad. It is also the language of international communication, the media and the internet. So, learning English is important for socialising and entertainment as well as work.
Weakness:
The department is not getting any financial assistance from the Government. There are some constraints with regard to the conduct of M.Phil and Ph.D research programmes by the Department.
Opportunities
The programme has become a career guide. The demand for English teachers is high in India and many other countries. Teaching English is a good career choice for people with strong language and communications skills. People with a broad knowledge of literature, a passion for reading, a knack for essay writing and a devotion to education are well-suited for careers as English teachers. English is a global business language and hence it is not surprising how the demand for learning English is growing exponentially. While English is a requirement for many to migrate to or survive in an English-speaking country, there are many more who take up English for higher education or to advance their careers or business. Just as the demand for English students is increasing, there is an English teacher shortage as well in the job market. Those who qualify UGC-NET or SLET examination can enter academics as an Assistant Professor of a University. Those who qualify UGC-JRF can pursue research in the field of English Language and Literature with UGC fellowship.
Challenges
There is a big gap between the objectives of the courses the students study in the institution and the need of the society due to lack of resources. Most of the students studying this programme are poverty-stricken and unable to afford to use fancy projectors, whiteboards, laptops and programmes through the internet. Teaching English Literature to non-literature students with mother tongue as their medium of instruction at schools and colleges lies as a herculean task. The Department takes it as challenge to bridge gap between the two. And also needs to develop a kind of awareness among the teachers’ perspective towards the improvement of their professional qualifications, growth and development.
